Film is Fabulous!
I'm sure many readers of Curious British Telly are aware of Film is Fabulous but, if this particular marvel has slipped past your peripheral vision, let me tap you on the shoulder and point you in their direction.
Founded in 2023, Film is Fabulous is a charitable trust set up by film and television enthusiasts in league with De Montfort University's resident film experts. Their aim is simple: celebrate British television and film while rescuing it from the dusty yawn of oblivion.
And in just two short years, they've unearthed a glittering trove of material which had, for many decades, been missing from the archives. A quick glimpse at their Facebook page, for example, will highlight recent finds such as episodes of Emergency Ward 10, Vendetta: The Running Man and Hugh and I. A little further back, they also dug up several episodes of Basil Brush, so it's exciting to see that so many treasures are still surfacing.
When it comes to missing British television, of course, there's always an elephant in the room: Doctor Who. Now, there's been no official trumpet blast to announce that Film is Fabulous has discovered any missing Doctor Who, but they have hinted at knowing of missing episodes being held in private collections. Does this mean they've going to procure (or already have procured) these episodes? I don't know. But, as the holders of these collections edge ever closer to their twilight years, the chances of these collections emerging into the public sphere increase significantly.
Anyway, Film is Fabulous is, quite literally fabulous, so keep them on your radar. Many of their finds end up being shown at events up and down the country, while choice cuts have made their way onto Talking Pictures TV.
